SAVING THE PLANET

There is no planet B! Greens are committed to stopping global warming. Democrats and Republicans have failed to enact significant anti-global warming legislation because their candidates need to amass huge campaign chests to get elected. Much of this money comes from corporations, which are concerned with short-term profits, not the long-term well being of the planet or its inhabitants. WORKING FOR PEACE

Greens support peace in Iraq and Afghanistan and ending the War on Terror. We work with other peace organizations to pressure the US government to bring peace to Afghanistan and Iraq. The Green Party categorically rejects torture under any circumstances. US government torture policies violate US and international law, placing US troops at risk and damaging the US’s standing in the world. CELEBRATE MARRIAGE EQUALITY

Greens support full marriage equality and have done so since their founding (1992 in CA). The Green Party is the only political party that supports full legal and political equality for all persons, regardless of sex, gender, or sexual orientation. The Green Party supports the Supreme Court’s decision to make all marriages legal in all 50 states.

 

DIET AS A FORCE FOR CHANGE

Greens encourage movement towards a vegetarian or low-meat diet for ethical, environmental and health reasons.

Consumption of animal products is the largest contributor to global warming, requires over ten times as much water as a vegetarian diet, condemns billions of factory-farmed animals to horrible cruelty, and contributes to heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Greens work with other organizations to educate San Diegans and encourage them to reduce or eliminate animal products from their diet.

 

CALIFORNIA BUDGET PRIORITIES

Greens oppose balancing California’s budget on the backs of the working class. We support a system of progressive taxation that fully funds education, medical care, social services and provides a decent safety net for those unable to work due to age or disability.

 

 

ENDING THE WAR ON DRUGS: Explaining the Green Party Position on Legalizing Marijuana:

 

ENDING THE WAR ON DRUGS, in this case marijuana, is important due to the failure of the criminalization of marijuana policy and the evil consequences of this mis-guided effort. Over 20 million Americans have been arrested for marijuana offenses since 1965. The time has come to amend criminal prohibition and replace it with a system of taxation, regulation, rehabilitation and education.

The criminal prohibition of marijuana causes tax payer money to be poured into the prison and judicial systems and, in a discriminatory way, criminalizes whole groups in our society that are not criminals. Instead of wasting our resources in a vain attempt to prevent the use of marijuana, proper policy should be put in place for a regulated market so our government profits and not the drug dealers. By legalizing marijuana, we can put an end to the vicious cycle of violence and criminalization that is wasting lives.
